Information About Local Schools

Waterbury, Connecticut is one of the largest cities in the state. Famous for brass and copper manufacturing, Waterbury is also home to watch and clock making industries. The city has a large number of parks and recreational facilities including swimming pools, tennis courts and athletic fields as well as a number of private golf courses. The arts also thrive in Waterbury with its own symphony orchestra and numerous theatre companies. There is a large public school system as well as a number of private schools to choose from. The housing market reflects the diversity of the city with single and multifamily homes and condominiums in every style and to suit any budget.

Connecticut’s fourth largest city, Waterbury has a history tied to the Naugatuck River, the only major river in Connecticut whose source is within the state. The river provided the power and transportation that made this town the center of America’s brass industry. Today, Waterbury is a city on the mend. Recovering from the massive downsizing of factories and mills in the 1950s and 60s has taken some time. A number of revitalizing projects has given new life to the downtown area and interstate highway 84, which bisects the town, has connected it to other thriving business centers and metropolitan areas. The brass industry is still intact and other enterprises such as clock and watch making make it an attractive place to live.

At the town center is an elongated town green anchored by a small clock tower, some war monuments and park benches. A combination of old and new buildings line Main Street. At the north end of the green is a wonderful, free museum called the Mattutuck which gives an insightful overview of the city’s most recognizable products from the brass and rubber industries.

Recreational and cultural amenities are plentiful in Waterbury. A large public park system provides over 900 acres of well maintained playgrounds, tennis courts, swimming pools and ball fields. There are two municipal golf courses and a number of private ones. The town civic stadium hosts a variety of events. Local theatre and music abound with the Curtain Players stage, the Seven Angels Theatre and the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra.

An active real estate markets provides a good variety of housing choices and the extensive school system provides a solid education to the large student population. There are special programs for both the academically gifted and the handicapped. Adult classes are offered at various locations around town in the evening hours.
