Information About Local Schools

A busy commuter town, Farmington is a peaceful residential community for lots of folks who work in Hartford, but prefer the small town atmosphere of this very desirable place. The center of town is a charming, village-like cluster of stately colonial houses and old-fashioned shops still housed in the original antique structures that recall historical New England.

Surrounding neighborhoods consist of tree-lined streets interspersed with open meadows, peaceful ponds and gently flowing streams. House hunters will find a selection of both traditional homes and more contemporary styles in a variety of sizes. Condominiums are also plentiful

One of the nicest Farmington neighborhoods is anchored around the reputed Miss Porter’s School, a prep academy for girls where a young Jacqueline Bouvier, the future Mrs. John F. Kennedy, studied in her teen years. A short distance from the campus is the Day-Lewis Museum, which features a display of archeological artifacts owned by Yale University, and nearby is the Stanley Whitman House, a well-preserved early New England home. One of the more remarkable sites in town is the Hill-Stead Museum, an extraordinary collection of art and antiques including works by Monet, Degas, Whistler, Cassatt and Manet.

Farmington has preserved much of its natural splendor through the establishment of preservation areas such as the Scotts Swamp Sanctuary and the Memorial Town Forest. This makes Farmington an excellent destination for the outdoor enthusiast. Fishing, swimming and canoeing are popular activities along the Farmington River. Batterson Park has areas for picnics and a large pond for swimming. For hiking and bird watching, it’s the Winding Trail Recreation Area.

Families in Farmington are very proud of their schools, which include four elementary schools and one upper elementary school, the Robbins Middle School, and Farmington High, which offers a Special Education program, and Continuing Ed for adults.
