Avon is a comfortable, residential suburb of Hartford that features a variety of traditional and contemporary home styles, some large and some more moderate in size. Residential communities are rich with spacious green lawns interspersed with areas of woodland. The neighborhoods have been carefully designed to bestow a relaxed, rural setting. Tidy groups of condominiums and apartments can be found throughout the town. Over the years, Avon has continued to be a desirable place to live with exceptional cultural and business opportunities.

Avon has a charming town center, the highlight of which is the Farmington Valley Arts Center, a compilation of 20 working studios operated by painters, potters, jewelers and other artists who offer their creations for sale to the public. If you travel east along U.S. 44 (Rte. 10), you’ll find some of the area’s best restaurants and a collection of elegant shops. The Farmington Valley Mall is close by for more contemporary shopping and browsing.

Near the Farmington border is the Pine Grove Historic district. Here you’ll discover homes built before 1865 and the Pine Grove Schoolhouse, a one-room structure maintained by the Avon Historical Society. Inside, the original desks are still bolted to the floor with hand slates and textbooks dating back to 1920 carefully arranged.

The community is very dedicated to its educational system that features both public and private educational opportunities. In addition to a very successful high school, middle school and two elementary schools, Avon is home to a very fine prep school, Avon Old Farms, an architecturally distinctive landmark in the town.

Cultural opportunities are a prime focus of the town’s loyal residents. A host of organizations seek to provide opportunities for charity and development of the arts. Avon also has a fine public library and the Talcott Mountain Science Center offers a wealth of fun and educational programs for people of all ages.
